Today in Search and Social - 09/09/2008

Big G took a step back from its drive towards becoming Big Brother today.

“Today, we’re announcing a new logs retention policy: we’ll anonymize IP addresses on our server logs after 9 months. We’re significantly shortening our previous 18-month retention policy to address regulatory concerns and to take another step to improve privacy for our users.”

This was in response to pressure being put on the company by the EU about how long they were holding personal data.

Andy Beal thinks the G unit should go one step further and ask users for their input on their Privacy Policy.

Eric Lander dropped an awesome post on the evil that Google has become in the eyes of many marketers.

So all in all today a lot of posts making Google look pretty ominous. This new look makes me wonder how that sleek young start up got old so fast.

  2. Thanks for mentioning my post and providing a link.. but more importantly - thanks for considering it awesome.

A negative view of Google is nothing new for search marketers or for me. Their hold continues to strangle everyone from marketers and business owners to consumers and account holders.

They’re not so far gone that they cannot correct their image. It’ll just take a lot of work.
